Seven Buddhas on a Lotus Stand
CHINA; Sui to Tang dynasty (581–907); Gilt bronze; H: 22.8 cm; Nezu Museum, Tokyo, Japan |
| The Buddhas wear monastic robes in different styles and have their hands in various mudras. Each figure measures approximately 10 cm in height, and has an openwork nimbus with a flaming surround. The nimbuses were cast separately and later affixed to the figures. The Buddhas are each seated in full lotus positions on a lotus throne, which is linked to a pentagonal stand by twining lotus stalks. Small votive objects such as this sculpture were typical of this early period. |
