Kizil Cave 123: Bodhisattva in Contemplation
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 7th century; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany |
| This mural was located above the entrance to the right corridor in the main chamber, opposite another Bodhisattva in contemplation which is above the left corridor’s entrance. In the mural, a seated Bodhisattva is depicted with the left hand on the waist and the right hand under the chin in contemplation. The Bodhisattva is clad in jewels and has a flowing stole and a nimbus. A peacock in front of the Bodhisattva catches a snake in its beak, and the snake, in turn, is swallowing a frog. |
