Hotan: Buddha in a Lotus

CHINA, Xinjiang, Hotan; circa 6th century; Plaster; H: 15.8 cm; Tokyo National Museum, Japan
This bowl has a lid which fits neatly together and both the bowl and lid are decorated similarly. It was used as offering instrument during Buddhist ceremonies.
A lotus flower in bloom is engraved on the top of the lid as well as the bottom of the bowls while the sides are decorated with floral patterns. The style and decoration of metal objects created during the Unified Silla dynasty were greatly influenced by Tang dynasty (618-907) metalwork. Such works were made popular by the Korean royal family.
