Famen Temple Pagoda: Lotuses

CHINA, Shaanxi, Baoji; Tang dynasty (618–907); Silver; H: 41 cm
These lotuses were discovered in the rear chamber of the underground palace of the pagoda, in front of the eight-layer casket containing the Buddha's finger relic. They were used as offerings during Buddhist ceremonies.
The lotuses, leaves, stems, and base are made using silver sheet and silver wire. There is a large blooming lotus, a lotus bud, and two leaves. The center of the blooming lotus has lotus pods and 16 petals naturally arranged in three tiers.
