Ajanta Cave 17: Thousand Buddhas

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa mid-to-late 5th century
This mural is located on the right wall of the antechamber. There is a total of 1,055 Buddhas covering the entire wall and arranged in an orderly fashion in rows of uniform size. All of the Buddhas have conspicuous usnisa, long earlobes, and round faces. Each figure is encircled by a nimbus and an aureole. Their simple robes are red, brown, and yellow in color. Each Buddha expresses the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra and is seated in full lotus position upon a lotus throne.
