Kizil Caves: Head of a Bodhisattva

| Originally found within Kizil Caves, this 38 cm head of a Bodhisattva has a high topknot and is decorated with floral hair ornaments. The hairline is lined with S-shaped curls, which encircle the entire head like a garland of flowers. The features, including the eyebrows, eyelids, pupils, nose, and mustache, are detailed in paint. The Bodhisattva has unusually large, asymmetrical ears. The almond-like eyes, flared nostrils, and thin mustache are typical of figures from the Kuchean area. |
