Mahakasyapa and Ananda

| Both figures stand on lotus pedestals and have bulky heads sitting on thick necks. The robes of both are voluminous and were originally colored. Ananda has a contented look. One hand grasps the wrist of the other, which is holding prayer beads. The body leans slightly to one side and would give a sense of unbalance were it not for the backward inclination of the head. The ascetic Mahakasyapa, on the other hand, turns to one side and looks off into the distance. Unlike Ananda, the figure is barefoot, but any hint of severity is dispelled by the lotus clasped near the chest. |
