Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Sandstone; H: 4.6 m; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA |
| The Bodhisattva wears an elaborate headdress and jewelry that, judging from its pattern, suggests Shanxi as the original provenance. The square face, balanced on an elongated neck, looks downwards with a serene expression. Parallel feet emerge below an ornamented skirt secured by a knot in the shape of an animal head. The forearms are missing, and much of the original coloring and gold leaf is gone. A statue of this height, nearly three times life-size, is rare. |
