Mogao Cave 17: Five Bodhisattvas on Lotuses

The black border on the sides of this 9th century artwork indicates that it was likely part of a long banner. There is damage along the edges, but the colors are well preserved.
The images are visible on both sides of the silk. The five Bodhisattvas sit in different poses upon red lotus flowers. All of the figures have layered nimbuses and wear golden crowns and ornaments. The Bodhisattva at the bottom sits in full lotus position and joins the palms in front of the chest. The middle figure is depicted in profile, kneeling and looking upwards with a focused expression. At the top, a Bodhisattva leans to one side, holding a lotus flower in the right hand.
Large lotus leaves are interspersed throughout the picture. The orderly yet varied arrangement of the figures and their similar yet distinct appearances results in a pleasing image. |
