Leifeng Pagoda: Figurine of Sudhana

CHINA, Zhejiang, Hangzhou; Five Dynasties (907–960); Jade; H: 8.6 cm; Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Hangzhou, China
Recovered from the underground palace of Leifeng Pagoda in 2001, this figurine was carved from white jade with a greenish hue. It is 8.6 cm high, 4.1 cm wide, 0.7 cm thick, and weighs 43.7 g. The bottom is inserted into a rectangular base, decorated with wave-shape patterns.
The head of Sudhana is carved with feather-like eyebrows, single-edged eyelids, a high bridged nose, small mouth, and rounded ears. He wears a belt around the waist of his cross-collar robe, which flows out as if the wind is blowing. Sudhana bends to the left with hands against his waist and elbows sticking out. He stands on clouds, which start beneath his feet and project upwards to head level, becoming narrower with height.
