Houjuji Temple: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva

JAPAN, Mie, Tsu; Kamakura period (1185–1333), dated 1314; Sandstone; H: 217 cm
Ksitigarbha sits in half lotus position on a deep lotus throne supported on a Sumeru base. The figure and the throne are carved from four stones and then put together. A lotus petal nimbus is visible on the throne back. The figure itself is 89 cm and is simply depicted wearing monastic robes and holding a monk’s staff and a jewel. An inscription on the mandorla dates the statue to 1314.
