SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Unified Silla dynasty (668-935); H: 100 cm
This relief sculpture, located at Borisa Temple in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, was carved within a 1.5 m high shallow niche, 2 m above ground. It is listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 193.
The 100 cm high Buddha, with curled hair, fine eyebrows, and elongated earlobes, is depicted wearing a monastic robe covering both shoulders and seated in full lotus position with his hands hidden in the sleeves, resembling the seated Buddha at Namsan Bulgok Valley. The edge of the robe folds outward and flows down over the feet. |
