Tiantishan Grotto 2: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Gansu, Wuwei; Tang dynasty (618–907); Clay; H: 1.3 m; Gansu Provincial Museum, Lanzhou, China
This statue was located on the west wall of Grotto 2, and represents one of the best at Tiantishan. The statue of Sakyamuni Buddha is in full lotus position. The figure 's hair is drawn up into a topknot and the facial features appear fine and delicate. The Buddha gazes downward with closed lips, as if in meditation. The right hand forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra while the left rests in front of the abdomen. The Buddha wears a thin monastic robe with a hanging collar. The folds of the clothing look simple yet natural. This is one of the best clay sculptures from the Tang dynasty (618–907).
