Seated Buddha

CHINA; Liao dynasty (907–1125); Gilt bronze; H: 20.7 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
The Buddha is seated in half lotus position on a layered lotus throne. The four-legged stand beneath it rests on a reversed lotus. A gem is visible between the Buddha's hair and the broad usnisa. An urna is located above eyebrows that curve down to define the line of the nose. Long earlobes approach the shoulders on either side of the neck that display the three lines. The figure's monastic robe is opened to reveal a knotted robe and falls in deep folds over the wrists. The right hand is lifted in a mudra and the left hand is held across the body.
