Mogao Cave 220: Mahakasyapa

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Early Tang dynasty; Clay
Located on the right within the niche in the back (west) wall of the main chamber, this is the only well-preserved sculpture in the cave. Mahakasyapa is portrayed as an elder monk with knitted eyebrows. He has high cheekbones and elongated earlobes, and appears gaunt, with the neck muscles and sternum protruding under his skin. Mahakasyapa is clothed in dark red robes, and his hands are clasped in front of his chest. His overall appearance is stern and slightly imposing. A round, double-layered nimbus is painted behind his head.
