The Three Great Gilt-Copper Buddha statues from the Unified Silla dynasty (668-935) are the Vairocana Buddha at Bulguksa Temple, the Medicine Buddha at Baekryulsa Temple, and this Amitabha Buddha, which was listed as National Treasure No. 27 in 1962.
Amitabha sits in full lotus position. The monastic robe covers only the left shoulder and flows smoothly over the left arm. The hands form the mudra that represents the lowest grade of the middle class. Some persons believe the statue was created around the late 8th to early 9th century. |
