Head of a Buddha

PAKISTAN; circa 4th–5th century; Stucco; H: 18 cm; National Museum of Pakistan, Karachi
The Buddha has a well-rounded face, deep-set eyes, a sharply defined straight nose, a small mouth, and an urna. The eyes are hooded and have a serene inward expression. The full chin gives way to a neck that shows the three lines, signifying a great person. The wavy hair is piled into a topknot that depicts a usnisa. The work was created from stucco and was originally painted.
