Five Temple Cave 3: Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Jiuquan; Five Dynasties (907–960)
This mural is located on the left side of the back (north) wall. The Bodhisattva has a round face with large eyes, wide nose, thick lips, and full cheeks. The eyebrows are high and slightly arched. The hair is in a high topknot with locks trailing over the shoulders. Ornaments adorn the hair, shoulders, arms, and neck. The Bodhisattva holds a vajra in the right hand and wears a long green dhoti tied at the waist. The figure is painted with smooth lines of varied thickness. |
