Kumtura Cave 45: Thousand Buddhas
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 9th century
This mural, representative of the Kuchean-style Thousand Buddhas, is located on both sides of the barrel-vaulted ceiling in the main chamber. The ceiling has clusters of flowers painted along the central ridge, and images of seated Buddhas decorate the white background in a staggered pattern on either side. Each Buddha is seated on a lotus throne and has a nimbus and an aureole. They wear different types of robes and each portrays a different posture or gesture. Floating clouds are depicted below the Buddhas. Some of the Buddhas have a small figure next to them making offerings. |
