Li Jian (1881-1956)

CHINA, Jiangxi, Linchuan
Li Jian, also known as Zhongqian or Heran Jushi, was a calligrapher, seal engraver, and painter. He was the son of the famous calligrapher Li Ruiqing, and was well-educated and diligent. Throughout his life, Li held various positions at a multitude of art institutions including the Shanghai Art College and the Imperial Painting Academy.
Li's in-depth knowledge of Zhou script helped him to master the art of seal engraving, and his smooth knife work allowed his seals a dignified and simple look. He never limited his art to any particular school, and his occasional use of calligraphic techniques in his seals and paintings resulted in a fresh and interesting appeal.
His collection of written works include History of Chinese Calligraphy, General Theory of Calligraphy, and Stone Carving Research. His Buddhist seals include Maintain a Joyful Mind.
