Ngawen Temple

Ngawen Temple was built in the 9th century. It consists of five shrines, of which one was restored in 1927, while only the foundations of the others are left.
All facing east, the five stone shrines were aligned on a north-south axis. The restored shrine measures 12 m on each side. A statue of a lion is located at each corner of the base, symbolizing Sakyasimha, one of the titles of Sakyamuni Buddha. There are niches in three of the outer walls, but the statues they contained are missing. The shrine contains a statue of Ratnasambhava Buddha seated in full lotus position. The head of the statue is missing, the left hand rests in front of the abdomen, and the right hand is placed on the leg with palm facing up. There is also a statue of Amitabha Buddha on the site, suggesting that each of the five shrines may have housed one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas. |
