Zhenguo Temple Ten Thousand Buddha Hall: Heavenly Kings
CHINA, Shanxi, Jinzhong; Northern Han Kingdom (951–979), dated 963; Clay; H: 230 cm
The Heavenly Kings adopt a martial stance with one foot off to the side, so that the hip is turned to the other side. In both statues, the figures rest their hand on the handle of the vajra sword. The watchful eyes stare off into the distance while the mustached and bearded faces bear resemblance to the ethnic minority in China. One of the figures is wearing a plumed helmet, while the other is crowned. They wear Chinese leather armor with a mantle knotted around the shoulders. A beast 's head gnaws on the belt of one figure while the other has heads decorating the shoulder guards. |
