Yaozhou: Stele of Zhang Sengmiao

CHINA, Shaanxi, Tongchuan; Northern Zhou dynasty (557–581), dated 570; Regular script; Rubbing
This stele inscription was unearthed from Yaozhou district in Tongchuan, Shaanxi during the rule of Emperor Xuantong (reigned 1909-1911) of the Qing dynasty. It describes the life of Master Zhang Sengmiao in 24 lines.
Rendered by rounded brush tips in regular script, with hints of angularity, the composition is tight and detailed. Square cuts at the beginning and end of the inscription reflect the engraving style of the Northern Dynasties (386-581).
