Statuette of Monk
CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Ivory; H: 27 cm; Anhui Museum, Hefei, China
The statuette is 27 cm high and is carved from a single piece of ivory. The monk is depicted with a round face, a high forehead, laughing eyes, and a broad smile. He wears a crossed collar robe with long sleeves and a delicate pattern along the edges, and is seated at a desk with a sutra on it. He holds a frame drum with his left hand and a beater in his right hand. Underneath the desk, there are a number of animals carved in delightful postures among gnarled tree branches. This finely crafted statuette is an elegant and dynamic work of art, which brings out the monk's vivacious character. |
