Sahri Bahlol: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

PAKISTAN, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar; circa 4th–5th century; Schist; H: 57 cm; Peshawar Museum, Pakistan
The presence of a seated Buddha on the ornate headdress of this Bodhisattva identifies the figure as Avalokitesvara. The stance and musculature of the figure appears rather rigid compared with other statues from the same period.
The Bodhisattva's rounded face is mustached and has an urna located high on the forehead. A wide stole covers the left shoulder and loops down to the skirt. The folds of the garment are precise and great attention has been paid to detail everywhere, particularly the jewelry. The figure's arms hang down the side and the left hand holds a flower garland.
