Yokokuraji Temple Ruriden Hall: Lotus Sutra Mandala

JAPAN, Gifu, Ibi; Heian period (794–1185); Sandalwood; 19 x 16 cm
The Lotus Sutra Mandala is generally presented in painted form but this 11th century work is carved from sandalwood. It is displayed in the temple during the chanting of the scripture. A handle is located at the back of the frame, thought to be used in printing the mandala. The work was listed as an Important Cultural Property in 1914.
The surrounding edges of the Mandala are ornamented with a double-layered frame, decorated with vajras around the outside and a floral pattern within. The Buddhas Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna are located at the very center of the four tier composition. They share the same seat within an eaved pagoda as they expound the Lotus Sutra together. Armed Heavenly Kings that are carved in low relief guard the four corners. The rest of the space is filled with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas sitting four to a tier on lotus thrones. They have intersecting aureoles and nimbuses that act like niches. Next to the base are Samantabhadra on his elephant, and Manjusri on his lion, who are flanked on each side by symmetrically arranged figures of Avalokitesvara.
