Yemar Monastery Infinite Life Hall: Amitayus Buddha and Attendant Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Tibet, Shigatse; 11th–12th century; Clay; H: 200 cm
Located in the Infinite Life Hall at the Yemar Monastery, this Buddha sits in the half lotus position with hands held in what was probably the dhyana (meditation) mudra. Like elsewhere in the monastery, the folds of the heavy monastic robe worn by the figure are realistically depicted. The attending Bodhisattvas lined along both sides have nimbuses behind their damaged heads and wear long dresses decorated with clustered flower patterns.
