Ascetic Sakyamuni Emerging from the Mountains

This painting shows Sakyamuni after he has emerged from the mountains, ending his six years of ascetic practice. Faint gray coloring gives him a ghostly, frail appearance. Tilting his head slightly, Sakyamuni gazes downwards. His hands are tucked into the sleeves of his robe and held in front of his chest. The facial features are finely drawn and precise, while the robe is drawn with thicker brushstrokes. Dark ink highlights the eyes, the lips, an earring, an armlet, and an anklet. The inscription at the top of the picture was written by the monk Daochong. |
