Sangkraburi: Head of a Buddha

THAILAND, Chainat, Sangkraburi; circa 1300; Bronze; H: 30 cm; Bangkok National Museum, Thailand
The Buddha has small, dense curls and a band that separates the hair from the forehead but the usnisa has been lost. The earlobes are elongated almost to shoulder level and hollowed. Slightly raised eyebrows join to the bridge of the nose are on the flattened planes of the face. The half opened eyes are leaf-shaped and look down solemnly. This impression is strengthened by the full lips that are slightly turned down.
