Vajra

JAPAN; Northern and Southern Courts (1336–1392), 14th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 10.5 cm; Nara National Museum, Japan
This vajra is a Dharma instrument used in Vajrayana Buddhism dating from the 14th century of the Northern and Southern Courts period. Most vajras have five prongs on both ends, however, this vajra only has one lotus bud on each end.
　 The vajra is made of gilt copper alloy and both ends have a lotus bud engraved with three lines on the upper section. The handle consists of two Sumeru-like grips with a raised beaded section in the center.
