Mogao Cave 17: Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Five Dynasties (907–960); Ink and color on linen; 91 x 35 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This banner depicts a Bodhisattva with joined palms standing upon a lotus pedestal. The Bodhisattva wears earrings, a necklace, bracelets, armlets, and a headdress with ribbons tied on the sides. A red stole is draped across the chest, and a second stole flutters around the arms. The lower body is covered with a dhoti secured by a sash knotted around the waist. On the triangular headpiece of the banner, a Buddha seated in full lotus position on a lotus throne is bordered by two yellow strips. Two brown streamers hang from the headpiece, and a forked pennant of thick linen cloth can be seen at the bottom. |
