CHINA, Yunnan, Dali; Dali Kingdom (937–1253);Gold and wood; H: 11.3 cm;Yunnan Provincial Museum, Kunming, China
This particular style of Ajaya Avalokitesvara is found in Yunnan. The Bodhisattva wears a headdress, a necklace, and a bracelet. The figure is slender with a bare upper body and a lower body covered in a long garment. Standing barefoot on a lotus pedestal, the right hand of the Bodhisattva is held in front of the chest, while the left hand forms the varada (wish-granting) mudra. The mandorla features a flame and lotus petal pattern.
The shrine is lacquered and has a Sumeru base and an imitation roof with a round jewel in the center. The arched shrine is outlined with a bead pattern.
