Karla Cave 8: Mithuna Couples

These repeating images are on the capitals of the columns within the main hall. Two sets of mithuna couples are seated upon crouching elephant on each column. The details of the mithuna couples and raised trunks of the elephants are refined and vivid. Below are four square layers of corbeled stone and relief images of amalaka fruit and lotus buds. The mithuna couples in this cave are similar to that of Bedsa Cave 7, in which only the upper torsos are shown. This contrasts with depictions of the entire figure common in later periods.
