Kuei-Nan (1831-1918)
CHINA, Fujian, Fuzhou; TAIWAN
Kuei-Nan was a monk and artist who was skilled in calligraphy and painting. After several years of traveling and exploring many famous mountains in China, he settled in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Kuei-Nan's specialty was in painting fruits and vegetables. His existing work, Cabbages, is now kept at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung. The painting features a simple illustration of cabbages, which although may seem an odd subject, is a vegetable that is often portrayed in paintings and is thought of as a symbol of purity, clarity, and detachment. |
