Mogao Caves: Head of a Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Clay; H: 37 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
The sculpture was originally from the Mogao Caves. The Bodhisattva’s sharply braided hair is built into a topknot. The rounded face is delineated by arched eyebrows, a high, straight nose, and a slight smile. Traces of the original coloring still remain.
