Avalokitesvara Holding a Willow Branch

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), dated 1300; Attributed to Hyeheo; Ink and color on silk; 144 x 62.6 cm; Sensoji Temple, Tokyo, Japan
This unique Goryeo dynasty artwork is attributed to the monk Hyeheo. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva wears a headdress, a white transparent robe, an inner robe decorated with floral patterns, and ornaments such as earrings, bracelets and a necklace. The right hand holds a willow branch, and a vase is held in the left hand. Surrounded by a petal-shaped mandorla, Avalokitesvara stands on lotus pedestals and looks down at Sudhana, who is painted in the bottom left corner. The clothing of the Bodhisattva is exquisitely depicted with bright colors and intricate details.
