Candle Holder

CHINA; Sui to Tang dynasty (581–907); Stoneware; H: 21.3 cm;Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo, Japan
This ceramic candle holder is a Dharma instrument designed for light offerings to the Buddha between the end of the 6th century and beginning of the 7th century. The base of the glazed candle holder is in the form of an inverted double-layer lotus with thick petals whose tips turn upwards. The stem of the lotus has a small support for the crossbar, which has five cups for holding candles. The surface of the artifact is smooth and bright. The potter has produced a fine work of art that is also functional.
