Sanggyeom
KOREA; Joseon dynasty (1392–1910)
Sanggyeom was a monk and painter in the Imperial Painting Academy of Korea. In memory of the prince, King Yeongjo (reigned 1725-1776) of Joseon summoned painters from around the country to assist in paintings for a Dharma service at Yongjusa Temple; Sanggyeom was one of these commissioned painters. He was also well-known for managing the mural painting projects in Yongjusa Temple. In addition, according to the inscription in the niche of the Great Hero Hall of Yongjusa Temple, the murals were completed by Sanggyeom alongside Mingwan, Seong-Yun, and 22 other painters.
The illustration of the Amitabha Buddha Assembly at Hwangyeongsa Temple is the oldest surviving Buddhist painting by Sanggyeom. He also illustrated the Assembly at Vulture Peak in Namjangsa Temple. |
