Piyang Cave 3: Mandala
CHINA, Tibet, Ngari; circa 11th century
This decayed mandala on the ceiling of Cave 3 in Area 1 is painted on a 2 cm to 5 cm layer of mud and straw, which is further coated in white plaster. The mandala is contained within an irregular square and is primarily composed of blue and orange, with a bright eight-petaled lotus in the center. The identity of the mandala cannot be ascertained due to damage. |
