Yuan Tung Temple

Yuan Tung means Perfect Understanding. The temple was founded in 1890 to house a statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva brought to the Philippines from Putuoshan in China by a local Chinese devotee. The management of the temple was transferred to the monk Ruinian in 1979. When the old site became inadequate, the abbot Ruijin built a new temple at its present location in 1981.
The temple occupies 450 sq m and consists of a four-story building. The Avalokitesvara Hall on the first story houses the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva that originated in Putuoshan. The main hall is on the third story and contains a statue of Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara.
Since its founding, the temple has been conducting various Dharma functions and relief efforts, and has played an important role in the development of Buddhism in the Philippines. |
