Kizil Cave 129: Life of the Buddha

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 8th century
These paintings illustrating the Life of the Buddha are located on the back and side walls of the main chamber. The scenes are divided by red borders and at the center of each is a seated Buddha. Figures to the left and right sides of each Buddha assume either a seated, standing, or kneeling position, and all of them make gestures of offering. Due to the limited number of characters and limited detail in each painting, the rudimentary scenes fail to identify specific events within the Life of the Buddha.
