Shizhongshan Grottoes Niche 13

CHINA, Yunnan, Dali
Niche 13 is located in the Sand Valley area. Constructed during the early years of the Dali Kingdom (937-1253), this niche is 54 cm in width, 85 cm in height, and 4 cm in depth, not including the pavilion. A relief sculpture of Ajaya Avalokitesvara that has been significantly weathered is located in the middle of the niche. Nonetheless, some features, such as the nimbus, aureole, and lower garments, remain visible.
Four shallow carvings of pagodas are found on each side of the niche. The best preserved among them is a seven story pagoda with a height of 96 cm, a width of 25 cm, and a square foundation. A stone pavilion was constructed over the niche as an addition by a later generation.
