Palcho Monastery Kumbum Stupa Wisdom Shrine: Kunzang Drakpa Gyaltsen
CHINA, Tibet, Gyantse; 14th–17th century; Clay; H: 100 cm
This sculpture is believed to depict Kunzang Drakpa Gyaltsen, who organized the restoration of Shalu Monastery in 1306. The figure has short hair and an alert face, and is depicted wearing a red and orange monk's attire. Sitting cross-legged on an ornate lotus throne with hands hanging over the knees in a mudra, this statue is vividly individualized, compared to other historical figures in the Palcho Monastery. |
