Water-Moon Avalokitesvara

KOREA; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Ink and color on silk; 102.1 x 51.5 cm; Nezu Museum, Tokyo, Japan
Avalokitesvara sits on a rock above the sea, surrounded by a white mandorla. The right wrist rests gently on the raised right knee, and the left arm is extended to support the body. The Bodhisattva's blue hair is bound in a high topknot partially covered by an ornate headdress with an image of Amitabha Buddha in the center. Dharma wheel ornaments and a stole adorn the upper body. The elegant dhoti is decorated with fine golden patterns. Two knotted ropes are draped around the neck and hang down below the body. Sudhana stands in the lower left corner, joining his palms in reverence. A steep cliff rises on the right side of the painting. The landscape is painted in dark ink, while the figures of Avalokitesvara and Sudhana are richly colored. The golden clothes and ornaments worn by the Bodhisattva are particularly striking.
