Head of a Buddha

AFGHANISTAN; circa 3rd–4th century; Stucco; H: 20.3 cm; Art Institute of Chicago, USA
The Buddha’s head was sculpted in the Gandharan style and was created from stucco with the paint still visible. Yellow paint is discernible on the entire head and nimbus with radiating bands of orange, blue, and red. The figure’s hair is combed back and builds to a round usnisa and the elongated ears are present. The hooded eyes with their painted eyeballs have a slight inward gaze. The nose is prominent and the mouth is slightly opened. Judging from the material and the figure’s appearance, experts believe the sculpture may have been unearthed from the site at Hadda.
