Seated Buddha

The Buddha sits in full lotus position in the center of the painting, reaching down with the right hand to form the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. Sariputra and Maudgalyayana stand beside the Buddha, each holding a staff in one hand and an alms bowl in the other. An arch decorated with symmetrical images of auspicious creatures surrounds the central figures. Seated lamas in red robes are painted around the border of the picture. The thangka is painted in a rich red tone with blue and green highlights. The appearance of the Buddha and the surrounding figures indicates that the painting is from western Tibet. |
