Statuette of Arhat on a Rock
CHINA; 20th–21st century; By Liu Zemian; Stoneware; H: 35 cm; Foshan New Shiwan Artistic Ceramic Company, Guangdong, China
Seated barefoot on a rock, the Arhat has a high forehead, thick eyebrows, bulbous nose, full curly beard, and wide staring eyes that look into the distance. He has a knowing smile as if he is enlightened. His body is muscular and he wears a white robe across the left shoulder. The Arhat has a jade bangle on his left wrist and holds chanting beads in the right hand. An alms bowl is placed by his side.
Two basic tones are used: the light brown of the body, and the white of the robe. The details of the eyebrows and beard are black, dark brown is used for the beads, and green for the bangle. The expressive facial features and precise bodily proportion show the artist's skill in depicting human figures. |
