Duldur-Aqur: Portable Shrine with Prophecy of Dipamkara Buddha

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; Late 6th–early 7th century; Wood;H: 14 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
This carved wooden panel was once part of a portable shrine. It shows the Buddha in a past life, offering flowers to Dipamkara Buddha and prostrating before him. The Prophecy of Dipamkara Buddha predicted his eventual attainment of Buddhahood.
Dipamkara is depicted standing on a lotus pedestal. He has a usnisa, round face, and downcast eyes. He wears a thin robe across the left shoulder. The left hand is raised in the vitarka (teaching) mudra, while the right arm is held down by his side. Dipamkara is accompanied by a standing figure, while the prostrating figure below is the future Sakyamuni Buddha. The mandorla is in the form of light rays radiating outwards.
