Zhangjia Yingzi: Mirror with Kalavinka
CHINA, Liaoning, Chaoyang; Liao dynasty (907–1125); Bronze; Diameter: 23.8 cm; Liaoning Provincial Museum, Shenyang, China
This Liao dynasty mirror was excavated from Zhangjia Yingzi in 1956.
The round bronze mirror has a diameter of 23.8 cm. There are two incised kalavinka images arranged symmetrically around the central boss, both of whom have a human head with a high topknot decorated with ribbons, and a bird's body. They wear necklaces and bracelets and hold vases in front of their chests with wings stretched. The details of the feet and jaws are noticeable. Above the kalavinkas, there is a flower in full blossom and a floating cloud.
This mirror exhibits the high level of bronze craftsmanship evident during the Liao dynasty. |
