Sanchi Stupa 2: Bodhi Tree

INDIA, Madhya Pradesh, Sanchi; circa late 2nd century BCE; Sandstone; H: 175 cm
This relief can be found at the northern entrance, on the south side of the east post at Sanchi Stupa 2.
A pair of dwarves support a diamond throne in the very center of the post, behind which are railings that surround the Bodhi tree. The design of the railings is the same as at all Sanchi stupas. Flower garlands hang from the tree's branches and more are being brought by the heavenly beings that hover above. A parasol, which symbolizes royalty, is raised high above the tree.
The bottom section of the relief is filled with meandering floral and animal motifs. A water fowl and an elephant occupy the bottom, and the elephant's trunk reaches up to fill the space between a flower stem and a hanging fruit. A running antelope is fitted into the curve of the same stem higher up.
